School Health

A Public Health Nurse is assigned to each public school in Haywood County. School nurses play a vital role in the health and safety of public school children, and provide a wide range of services, including:

  • Direct health care to students and staff
  • Case management for special health conditions, such as asthma, diabetes, ADHD, epilepsy, and severe allergies
  • Advocacy, health promotion, screenings and referrals
  • Function as a liaison between school personnel, family, community, and health care providers
  • Educate students and staff, and build student’s capacity for self-management of disease when appropriate
  • Attending student care team meetings
  • Health counseling
  • Immunization compliance assurance
  • Management of comprehensive health programs at assigned school(s)
  • Skilled nursing supervision, including Emergency Action Plans and Individualized Health Plans for specific students
