A Public Health Nurse is assigned to each public school in Haywood County. School nurses play a vital role in the health and safety of public school children, and provide a wide range of services, including:
- Direct health care to students and staff
- Case management for special health conditions, such as asthma, diabetes, ADHD, epilepsy, and severe allergies
- Advocacy, health promotion, screenings and referrals
- Function as a liaison between school personnel, family, community, and health care providers
- Educate students and staff, and build student’s capacity for self-management of disease when appropriate
- Attending student care team meetings
- Health counseling
- Immunization compliance assurance
- Management of comprehensive health programs at assigned school(s)
- Skilled nursing supervision, including Emergency Action Plans and Individualized Health Plans for specific students
