Hiker Skills

Staying Found: Hiker Navigation

This six-hour course provides the hiker the basics of modern navigation required to not become lost in the wilderness. The course covers hike planning and preparation, actions to take during the hike, and what to do if bewildered. The foundations and fundamentals of traditional map and compass are presented with hands-on exercises. This information is then used to provide an introduction to modern navigation using a common cell phone app; again with practical exercises in a safe, controlled environment.

Staying Alive: Hiker Survival

What do you do if injury or bad planning finds you deep in the wilderness with night falling? This six-hour hands-on course gives the hiker the information, skills, and describes equipment needed to survive an un-planned night in the western NC back country. In a safe, controlled field environment, hikers learn and perform the basics of clothing, shelter, fires, light, first aid, and nutrition required to see the dawn with minimal discomfort after a forced night out.
