Citizens from around the region gathered in Canton on Wednesday, May 24th at 12:00PM, to listen one last time to the steam powered whistle at the Pactiv Evergreen paper mill. Employees can be seen lining the rooftops of several buildings paying homage to the vast history of the mill. At 12:00, the whistle began to blow and continued for five minutes. Following the traditional whistle, there was a three minute moment of silence interrupted only by a short piercing blast of the "wildcat whistle". There was then an additional two minutes of silence before you could hear the distant sound of church bells tolling 115 times, symbolizing the 115 years of mill operation.
