The Haywood County Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing to receive citizen input regarding submittal of a NC Community Development Block Grant Coronavirus (CDBG-CV) grant application to the NC Department of Commerce. The public hearing will be held on October 19, 2020 at 5:30 p.m. in the Historic Courtroom of the Haywood County Historic Courthouse located at 215 N. Main Street, Waynesville, North Carolina 28786. The public is invited to attend and comment. Written comments addressed to the Haywood County Board of Commissioners, 215 North Main Street, Waynesville, North Carolina 28786, will be accepted prior to the hearing.
The North Carolina CDBG-CV Program is designed to help a non-entitlement municipality or county to prepare, prevent, or respond to the health and economic impacts of COVID-19. The activities must be most critical to their locality and primarily for their low- and moderate-income residents.
The County plans to submit a CDBG-CV application for a two part project. The primary project is the upgrade of the Clyde Armory to enable it to function as an Emergency Shelter. The County is in need of additional shelter space because Covid-19 social distancing guidelines has reduced the capacity of Haywood County’s Health and Human Services shelter. The Armory will have at least 32 living areas, replenishing the County’s shelter capacity.
The secondary project is to support Mountain Projects in their mission to keep moderate to low-income residents in their homes. Monies from this grant will be distributed by Mountain Projects to landlords and utility companies as rent and utility supplements to reduce the number of citizens facing eviction or utility shut-offs.
