[ARCHIVED] Crucial measures to keep yourself, family and public safe

Total tests: 117

Negative 85

Positive: 0

Awaiting results: 32

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF, YOUR FAMILY AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC

Covid-19 is transmitted by sustained by hand contact with an infected surface or infected person and then putting hands/fingers to the face. Virus coughed or sneezed into the air is really only a high risk in medical environments, where there might be a high concentration of virus in the air (there are additional recommendations for the healthcare community).

Covid-19 is killed easily but it is an issue because it is the first time through the population. For 80% of us this will be a 5-7 day long illness. The biggest risk for getting exposed is at home.

THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO IS LEARN THE RULES

Know where your hands are. If you touch something, sanitize your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds, hand sanitizer (a drop is enough) or any disinfectant.

If you touch something outside your home, clean your hands.

Be aware of touching your face. The biggest reason to consider wearing a mask is to train yourself to keep from touching your face.

Stay six feet away. Distancing is just a new way of interacting for now.

Keep your circle small and don’t have a lot of contact with a lot of people. That way, if you get sick, you will know who you were in contact with over the prior few days, so they can be notified and quarantine.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE SCARED OF OTHERS IF YOU FOLLOW THE RULES!

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR FAMILY IF YOU GET SICK

If you get sick, isolate yourself by staying in a separate room and, if possible, a separate bathroom.

Disinfect the surfaces you are in contact with frequently. You can use a solution of 1/3 cup bleach in 1 gallon water and let dry for 5 min. You may also use a solution >70% isopropyl alcohol.

Avoid sustained contact with family and if you must go out of your room and interact with family wash hands before, wear a mask, keep 6- foot distance and when done, wash hands. You might also wear gloves.

Be even more careful if you live with people who are particularly vulnerable, such as older than 65 and especially if older than 80, on chemotherapy or immunocompromised for any reason. In this case, find somewhere else to isolate or be extremely strict.

If you feel you have what seems like a cold, isolate for 2-3 days and if you are feeling better, it is likely not Covid-19.

WHEN YOU CAN END ISOLATION

You may end isolation once it has been 7 days since symptom onset, feeling better and have had no fever 72 hour off any medicine that would suppress a fever, like acetaminophen/Tylenol.

If you are better but not symptom free, wear a mask until you are symptom free and disinfect hands frequently.
