The application period for the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program in Haywood County is set to close on March 31. All newly started active applications need to be completed before this date.
This means that anyone interested in applying to the program who has not started an application needs to do so in the next few weeks in order to submit the completed the application before the March 31 deadline.
The deadline will not affect those applications previously submitted or in progress. Applicants should continue to work through the process as instructed.
About the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program
As a result of the flooding that occurred with Tropical Storm Fred, Haywood County residents and property owners are eligible for assistance under FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.
Hazard mitigation is any sustainable action that reduces or eliminates long-term risk to people and property from future disasters. Mitigation efforts break the cycle of disaster damage, reconstruction, and repeated damage. Hazard mitigation includes long-term solutions that reduce the impact of disasters in the future.
For home and property owners, if you volunteer to participate in the Hazard Mitigation Grant program, assistance may be provided through any of the options listed below:
- Home & property acquisition
- Home elevation
- Mitigation reconstruction
How to apply
Home/property owners interested in applying for the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program can download an application at www.RecoverHaywood.com. Questions about applications, the application process, and to submit finished applications should be directed to Cody Grasty either by email, Cody.Grasty@haywoodcountync.gov.

While the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program application window is closing, other options for storm recovery financial assistance are still available through the North Carolina Residential Recovery Program.
The Tropical Storm Fred Residential Recovery Program (RRP) may provide assistance to:
- Repair, elevate, reconstruct or replace homes destroyed or damaged by TS Fred (August 2021);
- Reimburse homeowners for eligible completed repairs;
- To assist landlords in repairing rental units; or
- Help repair or replacement of private roads or bridges damaged/destroyed by TS Fred.
Home acquisitions or buyouts are not approved under the state program.
