Haywood County Fly Fishing

Haywood County Recreation is continuing their fly fishing program which began in August, 2019. Starting in June 2020, beginner and intermediate courses will be offered. Both courses are designed for those who are new to fly fishing and would like to learn more, or for those who want to brush up on fundamentals. Topics covered include: casting, fly tying, reading the water and much more. Both courses are led by local, experienced fly fisher, Tommy Thomas. Participants do not need a fishing license for the beginner and intermediate courses. Loaner rods are available for those who do not own a rod. Courses are free of charge to all participants. Both courses will be held below the dam at Lake Junaluska with a field trip to the West Fork of the Pigeon River.

New this year is the addition of Fly Fishing Expeditions. For intermediate and advanced participants, expeditions are a two-hour journey through Haywood County’s finest trout streams and rivers. Expeditions are led by local, experienced fly fisherman, Ray Sugg. A fishing license is required for participants and expeditions are limited to seven participants. All expeditions are free. To register for classes and expeditions please contact HCRP at 828-452-6789 or email ian.smith@haywoodcountync.gov.

Haywood County Hiking

Haywood County Recreation is introducing the Haywood Trails Hiking Program starting in June, 2020. The program is designed to educate and inspire citizens about the variety of hiking trails and scenic vistas that are available here in Haywood County. All hikes are easy to moderate difficulty and are led by local, experienced guides. Our team of guides have extensive knowledge of trails in Haywood County. Many of our guides either belong to local hiking clubs or are lifetime residents of this area. All hikes are free and everyone is welcome, you do not need to be an experienced hiker to participate. However, participants should register with HCRP before arriving.
